With intelligent public lighting systems to large energy savings


Public lighting is one of the biggest electricity consumers. Cities around the world are therefore experimenting with intelligent lighting systems that can be monitored and managed remotely and can significantly reduce costs and improve the quality of life in the cities.

Every year, EU uses 14% of all electricity only for public lighting, which represents a total of two billion Euros. If you add the excessive environmental pollution caused by lighting and related CO2 emissions, you can quickly figure out that the wasteful public lighting for modern cities that wish to improve energy efficiency represents a major problem.

In recent years, the public lighting management has dramatically changed, with technology playing an important role. Modern technology does not allow cities to only lower the costs of public lighting, but also to protect the environment.

The Dutch city of Eindhoven is considered one of the first European cities to reduce light pollution and adapt public lighting to the habits of citizens with the modernization of public lighting. With lighting based on LED technology, significant savings are being noticed. The technology is cheaper and less wasteful. Additional sensors and control units are making public lighting much smarter. They can be turned on and off depending on road traffic and sensors are able to detect the most popular walking routes and guide people when it is dark outside.

Smart lighting can offer much more to city authorities than just generate less wasted light energy. Street lamps can be used as platforms for various services in the cities, e.g. for measuring environmental pollution or traffic fluidity, thus becoming a part of the intelligent network infrastructure that helps cities perceive various changes in the cities and adapt to them in timely manner.

Cities can use smart public lighting in different ways:

  • Effective management of public lighting

Installed sensors can adjust the light to road traffic, pedestrian flow, time of the day and weather conditions. The light is accordingly dimmed, turned on, or, if necessary, completely shut down. Together with LED lights, such systems can lead to 60% reduction in the costs of public lighting.

  • Integrating smart city services

Simple integration with other street lighting systems in urban areas enables more efficient city management. Citizens can use smart lighting as wireless access points, points with digital signalization (information on the occupancy of parking spaces, occupancy of roads, accidents, notification to waste disposal services to dispose garbage in the neighborhood), info points for tourists or elderly citizens who are looking for a way home, etc.

Smart lightning systems can make urban areas more citizen-friendly; together with smart systems, they can help the authorities to improve energy efficiency and provide greater transparency over the activities of their citizens. Installing smart lighting can be your very first step towards the smart city management.
